Can anyone recommend a good free registry cleaner/repair software?

Posted under Registry Repair Software

My windows XP is running slower and slower and I suspect it may be down to registry problems. I have been running this PC for just over 3 years, use it every day and have a stack of software loaded. (I don’t think I have malware or viruses as I have always used AVG, Superantispyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-aware and Zone Alarm).

I don’t have Windows XP disks as it is an Acer and did not come with backup disks that would permit me to do a repair install.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Thanks for all the suggestions – I’ll look at them all.

Lorro, thanks for the idea to use ERecovery – can you tell me whether it strips all the loaded programs and data out or does it attempt to work around these things so back up is a safety precaution?

Please Help! Problem Burning CD’s with iTunes 8!?

Posted under Registry Repair Software

I downloaded iTunes 8 a few days ago. I think something went wrong, and it was taking a long time, so I canceled it, but it was nearly finished. When I opened iTunes, everything was fine, and all the new stuff (Genius and whatever else) was there, but this message came up:

Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD’s and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes.

So, I went to the Apple website and clicked "download iTunes 8", and a box came up that asked me if I wanted to repair iTunes, or do something else. Obviously it knew I had already downloaded it, so I clicked "Repair". It ran, and it said everything worked. Then I clicked on iTunes, hoping the burning would work. The same message came up as before. When I tried to burn a CD, a similar message came up. WHAT DO I DO? Thank you.

How do I restore the registry from my old computer so that The Sims 2 (plus expansions) will work on it?

Posted under Registry Repair Software

I had a Compaq Presario computer. It was pretty good, but then it started crashing. I managed to backup the entire registry from that computer (along with pretty much everything on the hard drive) onto a USB hard drive.

The computer was sent to a repair shop and it was fixed… until I added the entirety of that backup registry and much of the old hard drive’s files onto the computer. It worked fine and I was glad to see that my neighborhood in The Sims 2 was still fine. I play a little, and then close, and under forgotten circumstances, I had to restart.

The computer got in a loop of booting up a few seconds into the Windows XP loading screen, and then suddenly restarting and doing it over again until I turn it off. Back to the repair shop, and the computer’s back and ready to go. I do the exact same thing, and send it back again…

Then, we just get a new computer. Runs fine… although I haven’t started work on restoring the backups for fear that it’ll all screw up again.

Except for one thing: The Sims 2. I got nostalgic and decided to try and get that working, so I get the trial of Registry Workshop and dive straight for the Sims 2 keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/EA GAMES. (I have all expansions, plus one Stuff Pack: the Family Fun Stuff Pack.) I manually copy each of the keys into the computer’s own registry, and notice that there’s also some more Sims 2-related things in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Electronic Arts/EA GAMES, that seems to be the CD keys entered during install. I copy those over as well.

I then copy the actual Sims 2 game files (and that of the expansion/Stuff packs) onto my computer, and when it finished, I started the Sims 2: Apartment Life executable… only to find an error message, saying that the game was not installed or some core files were removed.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem without having to reinstall? I don’t have all of the game discs any more.

Delete corrupt registry key?

Posted under Registry Repair Software

I’m trying to install the Excel 2010 beta, but it says Office 2003 is corrupt and must be repaired or removed, and won’t install (I have many versions of Excel installed, including 2003).

So I tried to run a repair of Office 2003 from Office 2003 setup, but it says:

Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry….

I’ve tried:

– Deleting the key in regedit. It won’t do it. FWIW, it also doesn’t allow making any changes to it such as adding a value, and doesn’t allow deleting its parent key.

– Assigning permissions to the key to myself. It won’t do it.

– Taking ownership of the key. It doesn’t allow it.

– Running "Free Windows Registry Repair 2.0" and doing a full scan. It found lots of things to fix, but it didn’t fix that problem.

– Running PSEXEC from PSTOOLS to run regedit under the System account, and take ownership by the System account. It doesn’t allow it.

– Running RegDelNull.exe and doing both a targeted scan on HKLM, and a full scan. In both cases, it found nothing to fix.

Isn’t there some way to do a brute force delete of a registry key?!? What can I do?

Thanks,

Greg
Looks like it truncated the registry path. Trying again: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS
Okay, here it is in parts:

Part 1:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft

Part 2:
\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Part 3:
\OptionalComponents\MSFS

Vista Registry Corrupt. Laptop won’t boot. HELP!!?

Posted under Registry Repair Software

I keep getting this message on my HP pavillion dv 2845se (laptop) "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause."

File: \windows\system 32\config\system Status 0xc000000f
Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.

So then I try to boot up from my CD and do the "Startup Repair" and it says "System can not repair automatically" and sends to a new screen that says

"If you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer."

I had a USB attached to it but I’ve already removed and have been restarting my computer for over an hour but still no luck… I don’t know what to do. I can’t even get it started in safe mode, it just restarts. Is there a way to fix the registry in the command prompt setting. *I’ve also tried to reinstall my Vista but I can’t because it restarts or I get a blue screen error that says "Cache_manager" or "memory_management"

Can somebody PLEASE help me!!!
I’m going to try that but now I"m getting something that says "Status 0xc0000221, Info: The file is possibly corrupt. Its header checksum does not match the computed checksum."
I found my recovery CD’s so I’m trying to use that, but recovery fails and says "The instruction at 0×0041d1d referenced memory at 0×0f110b0. The memory could not be read "… Called HP and they can’t help me since my warranty passed.
