How to free up memory space on xp?
Posted under Registry Repair by admini have finally decided to upgrade my xp computer to vista home premium. i realised that i didn’t have enough memory on my hard drive because i only had 10.3 GB of free space when i needed 15 GB of free space. i have done disk cleanup, uninstalled programs, deleted files, cleaned my registry, repaired my registry, deleted internet history and cookies and defragmented the disk. i have only freed 3 GB by doing all of this.
my hard drive memory has a total of 37GB
What I suggest is install a second internal hard drive as a slave and store all your data on that and leave the other one just to run the OS and Programs.
That’s what I did with mine and it works fine and access is fast between the two.
if you want to install vista…my suggestion you need to format and install clean vista to your hardisk…
Id say get a bigger hardrive. 37GB is extremely small in todays standards.
Get some cd’s, or a portable hard drive. Put all the files you want to keep on them, gather up your software cd’s or download the installs & cd them, then format your disk and install vista from scratch. Then put your files back on.
Left click on my computer, right click on local disc c, open up properties, then compress all files and sub files, this will give you quite a bit of space, but it depends what you have on your comp as to how much it gives you, good luck with Vista, i am going to wait till they are through their teething problems before i think about it, as everyone i know that has it, is moaning about it.
Get a 8gb memory stick £17 PC world and put files, music and photos ect on it, this will give you space. If you got 10.3 +8 =18.3 Don’t forget you will get more space when you remove XP
You need a bigger hard drive, anything below 60GB is a waste of money, so buy a 120GB or higher. If you’re not confident enough to mess around with the insides, get an external hard drive (£60-£70) and use that for your programs etc., that take up a lot of room.
