These programs can help you clean your registry for free. I personally like CCleaner and Advanced WindowsCare Personal because they do more than just clean my registry.
1) CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. CCleaner also fixes your registry. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware.

2) Advanced WindowsCare Personal is a comprehensive PC care utility that takes a one-click approach to help protect, repair, and optimize your computer.

3) Eusing Free Registry Cleaner is a free registry repair software that allows you to safely clean and repair registry problems.

4) Registry Distiller is a free registry cleaner that will optimize your system by removing obsolete and incorrect information from the registry, resulting in a faster computer that is less prone to errors.

5) TweakNow RegCleaner Standard is a free registry cleaner that will scour your system’s registry for useless/unneeded registry entries and optionally remove these for you. These entries are often left behind after the removal of software, cluttering the registry and possibly hindering your system’s overall performance.

PC Cleanup and Maintenance
There are a few things that should be routinely done to your PC to maintain it, I typically recommend at least once a month depending on your usage. These things include (but are not limited to):
Perform Microsoft updates (they are released on the second Tuesday of every month). Be sure to click on Custom not Express.

I use Max Registry Cleaner but it cost money.
For free you can use:
pc world
registry distiller
tweak now (standard)
advanced windows care personal
eusing
ccleaner {good program}
You should also protect your computer by using a security
program for your own protection in these evil times:
Kaspersky [free trial and very good overall program].
AVG [the new version].
spybot search and destroy.
spyware terminator
panda security.
NOD32 [cost money but is the best and very fast].
bit defender [may give false alarms].
trend micro [good].
Norton [cost money, pretty good program].
Avira [94.26% detection rate which is very good].
eset.com
consumer search.com [review]
av-comparatives.org [compare and review].
adware-download.com
Avast
These are just a few off the top of my head.
There are many others, and if you need more let me know.
I will be glad to help.

Youre best bet is to research the available products out there. Check to see what features the products have, their effectiveness and ease of use for beginners. The Windows registry is definately not something you want to toy around with on your own. A simple mistake in RegEdit can cause problems far worse than before you were on the look out for a registry cleaner.
I would recommend this site:

They tested and determined the best options out there. I have used RegCure with great success in the past.
