   A virus scanner won’t repair many registry problems.

   There are a number of good virus scanners out there. Some are free (AVG Free, AntiVir Personal, etc.), others cost (nod32, F-Secure, Kaspersky, etc.). Housecall.trendmicro.com does give you a free online scan as the earlier answerer said.

   Registry cleaners are trickier, if only because there seems to be more bogus programs of this type, and registry-changing is an inherently riskier activity than virus scanning.

   There is the online PC Pitstop which gives you a good free scan, but if you actually want them to fix anything they find, you have to buy their product. They do seem to be reputable. You can try their scan just to see what’s on your system, and then decide if you want their service. I have used the free PC Pitstop.

   Another good registry tool is JV16 Power Tools from Macecraft Software. (The app includes other tools, too) It seems to be quite thorough, but it may be a bit daunting for some users. I use this software myself. It costs around $30. They offer a free full-featured trial, so you can try it and see if you like it.

   I know there are other good registry tools out there, but these are the two I know about and can recommend.
